We are thrilled that Master Consultant, Gill Kernick has been nominated for Safety and Health Practitioner's (SHP’s) most influential person in UK Health and Safety List. The award recognizes the person who has had the biggest, positive impact on health and safety in the UK in 2020, making a difference not just to their own organization but to the wider profession or society.
Gill has been nominated for being a high-profile voice on the Grenfell Tower Fire and for being pivotal in promoting the need to change the nature of safety within construction. As a former resident of the tower, as Gill watched it burn, she vowed to ensure we learned from it. She speaks and frequently publishes papers including for Cambridge University’s Bennet Institute of Public Policy and The London School of Economics and has spoken on major news channels. She edits a blog called the “Grenfell Enquirer” to promote learning.
The publicly nominated long list includes illustrious names including the Prince of Wales; Government Ministers and senior civil servants. Making the list is an achievement in itself.
The final list and award winner are based on public votes.
On hearing of the nomination Gill said: "I am humbled to be included on this list. I’m appreciative of the recognition but let’s never forget that 72 people died, and we need to have some tough conversations about why change is so slow-paced and bold safety leadership so scarce. We have a long way to go before we can say we’ve learned from Grenfell."
