NSF-ISR Expands Audit Service to Include ISO 45001:2018 Occupational Health and Safety Standard

ANN ARBOR, Mich., Nov. 01, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Following the publication of ISO 45001:2018, Occupational health and safety management systems in March 2018, NSF International Strategic Registrations (NSF-ISR) has been approved by the ANSI-ASQ National Accreditation Board (ANAB) to begin conducting audits to the newest international workplace health and safety standard.
ISO 45001 is built on the structure common to all ISO standards and is a more dynamic approach based on identification of risk and opportunities as well as occupational health and safety performance improvement, rather than the procedure-based requirements outlined in OHSAS 18001.
ISO 45001 will gradually supersede OHSAS 18001 over the next three years. During the migration period, NSF-ISR will continue providing audits for OHSAS 18001, while supporting organizations to ensure a smooth migration to the new international standard.
“ISO 45001 takes a broader, more comprehensive look at occupational health and safety, including internal and external stakeholders and interactions among organizations. It recognizes the key roles organizational leadership and workers play in creating a strong corporate health and safety culture,” said Joy Keniston-Longrie, Environmental, Health and Safety Business Manager at NSF-ISR.
Organizations looking to verify conformance with ISO 45001 are encouraged to begin migrating to the new standard as early as possible. According to Keniston-Longrie, organizations already operating under ISO management systems such as ISO 9001:2015 (quality management) and ISO 14001:2015 (environmental management) may find the addition of ISO 45001 in an integrated audit approach to be straightforward and provide significant benefits to the organization’s health and safety program. Understanding the key changes and expectations of the new standard can help any organization meet the requirements, whether the organization takes a stand-alone or integrated approach to ISSO management systems.
