How do safety leaders remain relevant in this new decade? It's time to embrace transformation in every area of leadership. It's an overused pun but we're beginning to see this new year with 2020 vision, especially as it relates to a leader's vision for the departments they oversee.
We are currently in the throws of a Fourth Industrial Revolution and yet too many leaders suffer from stagnation where their vision and goals for their organization are concerned. Here are some top trends to be on the lookout for in 2020 and beyond:
Trend #1: Sustainability. Too many leadership training plans have been rushed through with a one-and-done mentality. Instead, keep an eye on the sustainability of the vision beyond the initial training. It's one thing to cram new information in for the short-term. It's time to shift the focus toward how the knowledge sustained in the long game? Considering the global investment towards leadership development is over $300 billion, it's a waste when there is little followup in retaining that knowledge once it's imparted the first time. Typically, we lose 40% of what we first learn without a plan for sustaining that info, long-term.
Trend #2: Engage Millenial Managers in Mobile Learning The average age for the first-time manager is just around 30 years old. Welcome to the age of millennial management. It's time for an overhaul of our training and learning methods. A common myth is that do not value learning and growth experiences. The complete opposite is true. Surveys show that millennials actually value training and development more than in past generations. However, the same leadership training methods do not apply. Millennials are more likely to take the initiative when it comes to leadership and growth, and their preferred method of learning is a strong mobile-friendly option. Online development has more of an impact than traditional classroom learning. Millennials are the next generation of leaders, let's change our methods have the greatest impact on leadership development.
Seeing with 20/20 vision is a good thing. As we welcome 2020, and a new decade, it’s also a good idea for leadership development directors to have a vision for the future of their department. We’re in the midst of a Fourth Industrial Revolution, yet over the last decade or more, most of leadership development has remained stagnant. What is trained, how it is trained, and who is trained is much the same today as it was 10 or even 20 years ago.
To be relevant for the next decade, directors of leadership development have to embrace transformations in every area of training and executive education. Once only talking points, these five areas hold significant promise as they become a reality in 2020.
