A push for diversity is sweeping the biotech and biopharma industries. While this is true across many industries, diversity in biotech has been steadily on the rise over the last few years alone. This push for diversification has affected all ranks from line-workers to management and on up.
A diverse blend of genders, ethnicities, races, and orientations are being incorporated in the industrial workplace. Even in 2019, it is remarkable that the total number of CEOs that are women in the biotech and biopharma industries are still extremely low. For example, only 25% of top-line biotech managers are female. However, it should be noted that the trend is shifting in a positive direction. While many companies are making great strides and showing leadership in this arena, who is driving the diversity movement in the biopharma marketplace? Professionals in the life sciences industries were consulted and weighed in on this report.
Here are the results, looking at some of the biggest names in the biotech and biopharma industries.
This list is important because it includes many well-known biotech companies that have made it on this list. They are leaders in the industry and are well known by consumers who purchase their medications, use their products, etc. This shows that their leadership extends from their sales to the diversity of their hiring practices. When large corporations expand their diversity in leadership, it enables smaller biotech companies to follow suit and exemplify industry leaders.
Diversity in the workplace works when everyone has a voice and is encouraged to use it. Progressive companies such as the ones mentioned will thrive as a result of this diversity in ideas, thought, and practice. Time to say goodbye to the days of only one or two people of color in the room and almost zero gender diversity. Companies like Bayer have made it a mission to hire strong, diverse candidates in top leadership positions. Bayer, an industry leader in the biotech and biopharmaceuticals, realized that to stay on top will mean a change in business as usual. Their push for diversity in leadership has only enabled them to grow stronger and we encourage other biopharma companies to emulate them.
However, despite evidence of diversity in hiring helping companies to thrive in the 21st Century, it is still shocking that many biotech and biopharma companies are refusing to adopt this path. What can you do about this? One thing potential life sciences professionals can do when applying as a candidate for one of these companies is to do their due diligence in asking questions of the interviewer on the company's diversity track record and policies. Does this company support inclusion? What does the makeup of their corporate board look like? Remember, job interviews are a two-way street. This is the only way the biopharma and biotech industries are going to completely change from the ground up.
It’s clear that diversity is on the rise in the biotech industry. From the manager level on up, more and more genders, races and orientations are being incorporated and represented in the workplace. So, who’s leading the diversity cause in the biopharma industry? For BioSpace’s recent Ideal Employer report, life sciences professionals weighed in on the topic. The companies on these two lists, one measuring diversity in leadership and the other ranking signs of progressiveness, are some of the largest and most well-known companies in the biopharma industry. Let’s take a look.
Although the overall numbers of female CEOs in the biotech field are still “shockingly low” according to a recent report, representing only one out of every top four managers, things are definitely shifting, and change is coming. The list below showcases the top biopharma companies that have a significant amount of diversity present among their leadership levels according to life sciences professionals who participated in the Ideal Employer survey. This could range from anything regarding low-level managers to vice presidents and members of the board.
