I believe a primary role of the coach is to create an environment where the most effective coaching can take place. For the coach, this means being a committed thought partner, listening intently to the expression of their client. A coach must ask incisive questions, igniting curiosity and creativity. A coach must also appreciate and draw attention to the brilliance of the client, enabling them to bring forth actions that can cause the change to which they are committed.
JMJ Consultant Kate Beer articulates her philosophy to coaching beautifully with her Five Keys to Powerful Coaching:
1. Belief in Human Potential
I believe in the infinite potential of people. I experience profound joy in enabling people to create results they never believed were possible.
2. Power of Relationship and Partnership
The success of coaching is linked directly to the quality of the coaching relationship. An effective coaching relationship is based on trust, respect, clear boundaries and a cause worth investing time, passion and energy.
3. Space to Create, Reflect and Learn
Coaching time provides a sacred space in which the client can unshackle themselves from the to-do lists of the day. They are invited into a space to create, reflect and learn.
4. Enabling New Thinking and Removing Barriers to Performance
Through coaching practices and tools, it is my job as coach to enable the emergence of new thinking and capabilities in the client, allowing them to break through barriers to performance.
5. Structure for Success
Performance coaching works best when there are clear and measurable goals with sufficient structures to support this focus.
