The deadly disease has afflicted or displaced 20,000 people. What began in Wuhan, China has spread to 17 countries and counting including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, United Arab Emirates, and the United States. It has been determined that the virus can be transmitted from person to person.
This could affect millions of travelers who are facing everything from delays to quarantine. The timing of the outbreak is especially troublesome for China as the Lunar New Year is the highest point in the year for tourism to the country. Travel spreads the virus like a wildfire, say safety experts. Safety consultants are here to offer tips for travelers to stay healthy and navigate this complex situation safely. Here are a few tips for business travels who may be crisscrossing the region.
Tip #1: Avoid proximity with anyone with symptoms of a cold. Symptoms of the coronavirus mimic that of a flue or cold. Stay clear of anyone showing symptoms of fever, chills, sore throat and obstructed breathing. Scientists are still learning the extent of how it is transmitted from person to person so better be safe than sorry.
Tip #2: Throughoughly wash your hands for at least 20 seconds. There is no known vaccine for a coronavirus so keep your hands as sanitary as possible.
Tip #3: Steer clear of live animals when traveling through China. Scientists believe they have traced the origin of the outbreak to a seafood market where live animals were auctioned off.
Tip #4: Stay clear of tourist attractions throughout China. China is shuttering popular tourist attractions such as sections of the Great Wall of China and Shanghai Disney has all been closed to the public during the safety epidemic.
Tip #5: If you start to notice symptoms after traveling to or from China, immediately contact a health authority to report your illness. Your doctor should know about your travel history. Be open and transparent with your health care provider. The safety of others could be at stake.
A coronavirus outbreak that started in Wuhan, the most populous city in central China, has killed at least 494 people and infected more than 24,000.
The disease has spread to at least 25 other countries outside of China: Australia, Belgium, Cambodia, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Nepal, the Philippines, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates, the UK, the US, and Vietnam.
The coronavirus family is a large group of viruses that typically affect the respiratory tract. Coronaviruses can lead to illnesses like the common cold, pneumonia, and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), which resulted in 8,000 cases and 774 deaths in China from November 2002 to July 2003. Authorities suspect this new coronavirus jumped from animals to people at a seafood market, then humans started transmitting the virus to one other.
