Leaders listen up: employees are asking to be heard. How do you gain a clear understanding of your employee's needs? It starts with active listening. For example, when managing employees, what efforts do you do to get to know them? First off, start each day by meeting the employees on their shift. Schedule the meeting to last for at least 30 minutes each. Start with the highest senior employees and work from there.
It's important to communicate your expectations with each employee. The three pillars are Honesty, Integrity, and Loyalty. After sharing expectations with each employee, ask them, what they expect from you? Many employees will be caught off guard by this question. That's precisely the point. Your employees may not have experienced this kind of question coming from a manager. Active listening goes both ways. A manager must communicate expectations with their employee (and vice-versa). This way, there can be no misunderstandings.
Mark Whitten | Jul 29, 2019 - As leaders, it should go without saying the importance of listening to our employees. So why don’t more leaders listen? In our hectic workplaces, it can be hard at times. However, I implore you to consider the benefits of taking that time. They outweigh the investment tenfold.
In late 2012, I took a new assignment as general manager of a Tier 1 automotive supplier in Ontario, Canada. This was a 30-year-old division that had an established culture. I was familiar with the facility; it had been through a tough launch and multiple management changes in the previous three years.
In my first general meeting with the approximately 550 employees, I made a commitment to meet with each and every employee one-on-one for 30 minutes.
