Construction Safety: Senior Construction Leader, Tom Peterson Shares Why Holistic Safety is Important to Him, His Own Safety Leadership Journey, and Leadership Practices Enabling a Psychologically Safe Environment

As the eighth Construction Safety Week has come to an end, it is always good to remind ourselves that every day is a safety day. It was a great week to raise awareness of the construction industry’s collective commitment to workplace safety and eliminating injuries. The week was also a fantastic opportunity to reflect on our own leadership journey, share and encourage others to raise critical conversations, and celebrate teams and individuals for their commitment and leading the way forward.
Construction is what builds our countries and communities, and our essential infrastructure. It is vital that we get everyone home safe to their families in better shape than they arrived. Many leaders within the construction industry have been on their own safety leadership journey, building on their leadership capabilities and skills while stepping out of their comfort zone. Leaders are increasing their self-awareness and understanding how they communicate and behave will influence the level of trust they can build with everyone in their team and the environment and culture they desire.
Kelli Bettenhausen, JMJ senior consultant speaks to Tom Peterson a construction senior leader about ‘why holistic safety is important to him, his own safety leadership journey and the practices he found to be most effective in creating a psychologically safe environment. Tom reflects on how safety is a common language we all share and you can start with a simple conversation around safety to lead into raising critical and challenging conversations that are needed to keep people safe and enable operational excellence.
