We are thrilled that Master Consultant, Gill Kernick has been named as one of the most influential figures in UK Health and Safety. The SHP award recognizes individuals who actively drive change in health and safety in the UK and people who are successfully promoting a culture of health and safety within their organizations and the industry at large.
Gill has been named for being a high-profile voice on the Grenfell Tower Fire and for being pivotal in promoting the need to change the nature of safety within the construction industry. As a former resident of the tower, as Gill watched it burn, she vowed to ensure we learned from it. She speaks and frequently publishes papers including for Cambridge University’s Bennet Institute of Public Policy and The London School of Economics and has spoken on major news channels. She edits a blog called the “Grenfell Enquirer” to promote learning.
On hearing of the news Gill said: "I was completely surprised by the nomination and am humbled to be included on this list. Having a public voice became important to me after I watched Grenfell burn. I'm appreciative of the recognition, but more critically, that a campaigner for Grenfell made this list is a recognition of all those working tirelessly for change. It is a recognition for all who have an unwavering stand that no-one should be unsafe in their homes. And let us never forget the 72 lives lost on the 14th June 2017.”
Here are a few of the comments shared by the public voters:
“Gill’s relentless pursuit of influencing regulation and improving life safety systems within residential and commercial construction is greatly aiding to reduce the potential loss of life and injury. Gill’s dedication to helping ensure that the Grenfell residential structure fire example will never again repeat is critical, important work in preventing future loss of life.”
“Gill is an advocate for the people and believes in ‘making the impossible, possible’. She is an advocate driven by values and a leader for these values.”
“Gill’s extraordinary work with the Grenfell community has led to positive industry change. Gill had successfully broadened HSE into spaces that are just too difficult for most, including deep-rooted cultural challenges.”
