In an attempt to disrupt the way new buildings are built and megaprojects are designed, Marriott International intends to construct the planet's tallest modular hotel. Marriott envisions a modular future for its new builds.
The new hotel is slated to open in New York City in the latter part of 2020 and will be dubbed the AC Hotel New York NoMad. The construction project is currently being fitted with prefabricated and pre-furnished guest accommodations. The tower will be 360 feet tall and aims to entice North American hotel developers to go down the modular road less traveled. The world's tallest modular hotel will feature a modular roof and even a modular rooftop bar (serving modular cocktails?). The new build's modular tower is on pace to be constructed over 90 days. Marriott hopes this new landmark will be a "game-changer" both as a landmark and as an inspirational touchstone to future developers of new modular hotel builds in the real estate and development industries. Marriott has bragging rights to the biggest string of hotels in the North American continent. In 2014, Marriott International originally began to investigate the positive effects of modular construction to see if it could cut down on the timespan of new build construction. A shortage of labor just couldn't keep pace with the booming construction industry in North America. Marriott has seen a doubling of the time it takes to construct a new build. Since exploring modular building, the experiment has worked. Marriott International aggressively educates owners, employees, lenders, consultants, general contractors, project managers, and anyone else that works on the process of launching a new hotel. Marriott hosts town hall-style events, tours of the modular factory, and works with modular construction industry leaders on current trends and best practices in new hotel builds. Hotel developers are always looking for ways to make a complicated and lengthy process of building a hotel more efficient and streamlined. Marriott intends to court developers into using prefabrication in the building out of guestroom by offering incentives and price breaks in the construction of four of its major brands: Courtyard by Marriott, Fairfield by Marriott, SpringHill Suites by Marriott, and TownePlace Suites by Marriott. Previously the largest of the Marriott modular-built hotels is located in Hawthorne, California. It has over 350 rooms and was the very first hotel to feature a prefabricated elevator bank was the Fairfield by Marriott Inn and Suites in Prairie, Wisconson.
NATIONAL REPORT—Marriott International is striving to disrupt the way buildings get built with plans for the world’s tallest modular hotel is expected to open in NYC in late 2020. It will be the AC Hotel New York NoMad.
Currently, the new-build hotel is on track to be stacked in late fall with prefabricated and pre-furnished guestrooms. Once erected over a 90-day period, the 360-ft.-tall tower will represent a milestone for Marriott’s ongoing initiative to encourage hotel developers in North America to embrace modular for new construction projects. It will be topped with a modular roof and modular rooftop bar.
“In North America, the construction process hasn’t changed significantly in 150 years and it’s ripe for innovation,” said Eric Jacobs, Marriott International, chief development officer, North America, Select and Extended Stay Brands. “The world’s tallest modular hotel in one of the world’s greatest destinations will act as a game-changing symbol to ignite even greater interest in modular among the real estate and lending industries.”
